This book is the first in a series and does an admirable job of introducing the cast of characters that will be continuing in the series without slowing down the action of the main plotline. Enough of the backstory of the main supporting characters is given that I'm sure I'm going to enjoy visiting this town and these people in future stories. Maddie's family is close knit and bands together against outside forces. Maddie's father may pretend he doesn't see things, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't aware that Maddie's high school sweetheart, now FBI agent Nick Jaconetti, has been sleeping over in Maddie's room.

The mystery is rather low key, but it's convoluted enough to keep the reader interested, even if they figure it out before the revelation. The relationship between fashion conscious, Maddie, and Goth girl, Eve, is funny, endearing, and makes me wish I had so close a female friend to share the ups and downs of life with.

I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series, hoping that it will continue this auspicious beginning.
