A Veiled Deception (A Vintage Magic Mystery)
by Annette BlairCover Artist: Kimberly Schamber Review by Gayle Surrette Berkley Paperback ISBN/ITEM#: 9780425226407 Date: 06 January 2009 List Price $6.99 Amazon US / Amazon UK / Show Official Info / Madeira (Maddie) Cutler works in the fashion industry as a designer for one of the top New York fashion houses. She also collects vintage clothing. As the oldest of four children, she's anxious to get home for her sister Sherry's wedding to Justin. Eve Myers, Maddie's best friend and flat mate, comes along to visit her family and enjoy the break from New York. They arrive to find the situation tense as Jasmine Updike, a college friend of Justin's, is acting more like it's her wedding rather than Sherry's. What's worse is that Justin's mother, Deborah, is aiding in the take over of the wedding plans. As if that wasn't bad enough, Jasmine turns up dead, strangled with Sherry's wedding veil, and Sherry is nowhere to be found. And when she does get back she refuses to say where she was. Maddie can't let her sister take the blame, so she and Eve swing into action to prove Sherry's innocence. This book is the first in a series and does an admirable job of introducing the cast of characters that will be continuing in the series without slowing down the action of the main plotline. Enough of the backstory of the main supporting characters is given that I'm sure I'm going to enjoy visiting this town and these people in future stories. Maddie's family is close knit and bands together against outside forces. Maddie's father may pretend he doesn't see things, but that doesn't mean that he wasn't aware that Maddie's high school sweetheart, now FBI agent Nick Jaconetti, has been sleeping over in Maddie's room. The mystery is rather low key, but it's convoluted enough to keep the reader interested, even if they figure it out before the revelation. The relationship between fashion conscious, Maddie, and Goth girl, Eve, is funny, endearing, and makes me wish I had so close a female friend to share the ups and downs of life with. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series, hoping that it will continue this auspicious beginning. Book also contains "Tips for Vintage Handbag Lovers" and a how-to "Make Your Own Evening Clutch".
