Osgood Manning, known as Ossie, provides keen intelligence to the Irregulars led by Wiggins. Ossie wants to find his father or information about him meanwhile, he helps the Irregulars. He resembles Holmes in appearance and intelligence.

The boys, all orphans, live together in the Castle, an abandoned carriage factory. They manage a hand-to-mouth existence aided by contributions from Sherlock Holmes for their aid in his cases.

He calls upon them when Elsa Hoff, a newly rich young woman, seeks their assistance to investigate the mysterious death of her aunt during a séance. While Elsa accepted the doctor's official verdict of a heart attack, she believes those conducting the séance caused it. Holmes doubts murder, but the circumstances of the event and the appearance of the "ghost" of her aunt's husband intrigues him. He orders the Irregulars to watch the house of the mediums.

Ossie also enlists his friend Pilar, a Gypsy girl, who has worked as a fortune teller and summoned the spirit of his dead mother. He struggles to keep an open mind about psychic phenomena despite Holmes rejection of it.

The authors portray Victorian London, but without soaking the readers in the poverty and grittiness of an adult novel. It romanticizes the Irregulars and focuses on their tenacity and cleverness.

A fast easy read, The Conjured Man is the second novel featuring the Irregulars and others are sure to follow. It also contains several appendices on period slang, tips on disguise, and notes on medium con artists.
