China Bayles' Book of Days is one of those books you'll want to keep on your desk. There's one page per day of the year. Each page is brimming with information about herb, a recipe, references to check out, customs, beliefs, quotations and much more.
I love herbs and herb lore. I have the start of a perennial herb garden in my yard. I'll never be as knowledgeable as the China Bayles character in Susan Wittig Albert's book, but I enjoy learning new and interesting facts about herbs and their role in history, culture, and belief systems throughout history. In this book, each day you get a page of interesting reading that may lead you on to more reading with listed references and suggestions. There's recipes to try out for food and for cosmetics and for fun.
But best of all because the days of the week aren't mentioned your can read one page a day for a year and then…start all over again on January 1st and read it again. If you've read the books you'll see entries by many of the characters you've read about.
Do yourself a favor and give yourself a gift of this book -- which will then give you a few minutes of calm in your busy schedule.
Oh, and in case you're dithering there's an Index of Recipes, an Index of Cosmetics, Crafts, and Medicines, and an Index of Special Features: About China's Books, From Susan's Journal, The Myra Merryweater Herb Guild, Theme Gardens, Celtic Tree Months, Herbs of the Zodiac, and Places to Go (which is a list of farms and gardens to visit). So you don't have to worry that you'll not be able to find that recipe you saw -- it will be in the index.
