I don't know about you but I'm very worried about April. If you remember the rhyme, "April showers bring May flowers." Well, March has been so wet that I've worried about growing gills as I squish about the yard trying to get the garden area ready. So, while I'm really looking forward to those May flowers -- I'm a bit skeptical about the showers.

What I'm not skeptical about is that we have some interesting books reviewed this month that should give you some helpful information when picking additions for your to-be-read (TBR) stack. For those who crave short stories there's the Mystery Writers of American supernatural anthology Crimes by Moonlight: Mysteries from the Dark Side. If you like historicals, try Midnight Fires: A Mystery with Mary Wollstonecraft by Nancy Means Wright. Or how about a Where are they now? mystery with Who Killed the Pinup Queen? by Toni L. P. Kelner. Whatever your taste in mysteries we hope you'll find something to catch your fancy.

We've also got a new original short story, "Critic's Choice" by Rekha Ambardar. Hope you enjoy this tasty mystery.

Remember, we'd really like some feedback from our readers. It's the only way we have of knowing if we're meeting the needs of mystery readers.

Now, take a moment to look over our usual announcements.

Special Announcement (Update 2/2010): Fiction now being accepted

Gumshoe Review is now open to accept original fiction (mysteries, not character studies). The short stories should be no longer than 1,000 words. Pay will be 5 cents per word to a maximum of $50 (so if the story is longer you still only get $50). Our plan is to publish one short story per month. Stories should be sent as plain text within the body of an email or as a .txt, .pdf (not password protected), .doc, or .wp attachment to editor@gumshoereview.com. Please use the subject line "Gumshoe Short Story Submission". We will acknowledge receipt of the story immediately but it may take us longer to respond about whether we will use the story in an upcoming month. Unfortunately, until we see what type of response we get we won't be able to estimate response time. Please include a short bio with the story. Works should be original and unpublished.

What are we looking for? Our Senior Editor put it quite succinctly: "We're looking for stories where the investigator is the protagonist, or at least a significant character, and the focus is on solving a crime, or getting someone out of a jam, or seeking some sort of justice."

Special Announcement: Nonfiction Essays being accepted

Gumshoe Review is now open to accept nonfiction essays on topics of interest to readers, writers, and students of the mystery genre. The essays should be no longer than 1,000 words. Pay will be 5 cents per word to a maximum of $50 (so if the essay is longer you still only get $50). Our plan is to publish one essay per month. Essays should be sent as plain text within the body of an email or as a .txt, .pdf (not password protected), .doc, or .wp attachment to editor@gumshoereview.com. Please use the subject line "Gumshoe Essay Submission". We will acknowledge receipt of the essay immediately but it may take us longer to respond about whether we will use the essay in an upcoming month. Unfortunately, until we see what type of response we get we won't be able to estimate response time. Please include a short bio with the essay particularly mentioning your qualifications in the field. Works should be original and unpublished.

Reviewers Wanted:

While we're happy to have a core of great reviewers for Gumshoe, we'd like to have more. If you have a great desire to review mysteries for no pay but the glory of a by-line, write to us at editor(at)gumshoereview(dot)com telling us a bit about yourself and send a 500 word (or so) review of a mystery that you have recently read as a sample. We should be able to get back to you within the month.
Publishers Take Note:
Material sent to us will be listed in our books received column and may also be commented on or reviewed. With few exceptions, material not sent will not be listed or reviewed. Please send materials to Gumshoe c/o Gayle Surrette, 16440 Baden Westwood Road, Brandywine, MD 20613.
Gumshoe covers the entire spectrum of the mystery genre. If it seems that we are heavily leaning towards cozies it could be because we're receiving cozies. If it's mystery, mystery/thriller, noir, police procedural, whatever...send it along and well add it to our books received and maybe even review it.

Many have asked -- we do cover small press. So, if your book is a published by a small press make sure we get a copy to add to our books received column and to list for our reviewers.

Media People Take Note:
We'd really like to have some reviews of newly released DVDs and other media but if we don't get copies we unlikely to review them. So send your copies to Gumshoe c/o Gayle Surrette, 16440 Baden Westwood Road, Brandywine, MD 20613.
Convention Calendar:
We'd like to add a convention calendar to our magazine. However, we don't have time to scour the internet looking for what's happening in the mystery arena. Please send us your convention listings. Send to: editor(at)gumshoereview(dot)com.
Letters to the Editor(s):
Putting out a monthly ezine is always entertaining and for us a learning experience -- however, without feedback we really don't know how we're doing. Write and let us know what you think of our zine and how we could make it better or what you thought of the books we reviewed. Send to: editor(at)gumshoereview(dot)com.
