Sofie Kelly's debut mystery, Curiosity Thrilled the Cat, begins the Mystical Cats Mystery series. Librarian Kathleen Paulson, fighting with a contractor over slipping schedules and various accidents, encounters more problems when she meets Gregor Easton, the noted composer and guest conductor for the local summer music festival. When he visits the library and complains about the lack of computer access, Owen, one of Kathleen's cats, leaps on Easton's head. To mollify him, she offers to send him breakfast. However, her problems only intensify when she finds his body the next morning.
When Kathleen first came to Mayville, Minnesota, from Boston, she adopted two feral cats who followed her home from the abandoned house on Wisteria Hill. She named them Hercules and Owen. The cats adapt well, but only to Kathleen. Owen delights in dismembering catnip-filled chickens, but not Hercules who loves Barry Manilow. Owen detests the music. Kathleen notices other strange things about the cats, but dismisses them as hallucinations. Owen seems able to disappear and reappear at will and Hercules can walk through doors.
At first the police suspect Kathleen, especially after traces of Gregor's blood are found in the library and a note signed Kathleen implicates her. Convinced only finding the real murderer will satisfy the police, she investigates Gregor's background and the clues her cats mysteriously bring to her attention.
Humor and supportive friends help Kathleen cope. No one liked Gregor and he had a reputation for taking advantage of beautiful young women. Kathleen worries Ami Lester may have been a target, but can't believe the girl would have committed murder.
Some mystery fans will dislike the cats' strange abilities and their role in solving the mystery. Cat lovers will enjoy them as all-knowing heroes. Spunky and resourceful, Kathleen gradually accepts her cats' special abilities and their help in solving the mystery of who killed Gregor.
