Detective D.D. Warren of Boston PD homicide is summoned to join Detective Bobby Dodge of the state police to investigate a domestic murder by a state trooper. Tessa Leoni claims she shot her husband Brian in self defense when he beat her, but inconsistencies in her story make D.D. suspect she is lying. Most importantly, Tessaís six-year-old daughter Sophie is missing. Whatever secrets the mother is keeping, D.D. and Bobby need to find Sophie quickly and hope that she is not already dead.
Love You More is a mystery/thriller in the truest sense of the term. The mystery is what happened to cause a trained law officer to kill her husband instead of using less lethal weapons that she had available, and how Sophie came to disappear. The thriller aspect is not knowing what will come next in this tense cat-and-mouse game. The book is also a police procedural, with insights into police routine coming from both the investigator and the investigated as they alternate narration.
The case comes down to relationships between parents and children, how some parents would go to any lengths out of love for their children, while others are too overwhelmed by their own issues. All this resonates with D.D., who is newly pregnant and not sure how she feels about the fact.
Characterizations are first-rate. D.D. and Bobby are former lovers but now work together well and are sensitive to each otherís moods and concerns. Quiet Tessa reveals herself as a Rambo female state trooper who is capable of dealing with everything fate deals her. The solution to the mystery involves a few hard-to-believe leaps of reasoning, but who cares? This fifth in Gardnerís Detective D.D. Warren series is an exciting, gripping story that readers will race through.
