Josie Marcus plans to savor sampling the local St. Louis cuisine for a City Eats food tour. But things go awry at her first mystery shop, Tillie's Off the Hill Italian Restaurant. when an obnoxious customer is poisoned. Was the victim the real target-or is someone trying to ruin Tillie's reputation? He was certainly unpleasant enough to have been the real target.
Tillie, it turns out, is a childhood friend of Josie's mom. And Josie's mom more or less blackmails Josie into trying to solve the murder once Tillie is arrested. So, who did it? Tillie? The developer's scout trying to buy the restaurant? Was it the floozy down the street? Was it an accident? The truth was a surprise to me.
While trying to solve the murder, Josie still needs to be mystery shopping local restaurants for the City Eats tour. Some of the food she tries sounds truly awful, but, according to Josie, once you get past the idea of what you're eating, the food is pretty good. The descriptions of the food, and what it takes for Josie to take bites of it, are an entertaining side story in this book.
The characters and their relationships continue to be a big part of this series. The characters continue to grow, and to reveal a little more of themselves in each book.
This is a good book. I recommend it for any interested in a good, cozy book thatís easy to cart along and read wherever you go.
