Police rule Anna's death a suicide, although Harry has his doubts. He can't tell anyone he was at her apartment, however, because then it would appear that he murdered her, so he quietly investigates on his own.
Another investigation he's pursuing is a string of very professional Oslo bank robberies, one of which resulted in a murder. Harry partners with a new detective for this purpose, Beate Lonn, who has the rare ability to remember every face she's ever seen. He also consults with a famous gypsy bank robber who's in prison. Harry learns that Anna also was a gypsy and the two cases strangely intertwine.
Meanwhile, Harry's girlfriend Rakel is in Russia trying to win custody of her son, and Harry's old nemesis, detective Tom Waaler, sees an opportunity to get Harry out of the way for good.
Nemesis is a complex story with ingenious plotting and lots of twists and turns. Just when Harry thinks everything is solved, he discovers that instead he's been completely ignorant of what’s been going on. A sticker on the book compares Nemesis to The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo. In terms of suspense, continuing intriguing story line, and quality of writing, the comparison is right on.
