Retired librarian Lexie Starr, having found love with a retired widower, is anxious for his bed and breakfast, the Alexandria Inn, to succeed. She organizes a Haunted House to publicize it. Then, the young man she hired to play a vampire and jump up when people enter the room is found dead on the job. Worried by the death and the possible bad publicity for the inn, she wants the matter resolved promptly. Unfortunately, it soon becomes a case of murder, and Lexie finds herself a target too.
Walter, the victim, was a basketball star at the community college and popular with the young women. He was also heir to a substantial sum of money from his mentally unstable mother and had her power of attorney. A half-brother and a sister might have resented his influence on his mother.
Somewhat of a klutz, Lexie also manages to create more problems for herself and others. Her upfront questions offend everyone. When the police have little success in solving the crime, Lexie investigates on her own. She discovers a number of people, mainly young women, who might have been angry with Walter.
Her self-deprecating humor lightens the proceedings. Overall, the cozy mystery will amuse most readers, but may annoy others with her stubborn foolishness. Language is mild and there’s no sex. A few Halloween recipes are included. This is the third Lexie Starr mystery. The next is titled With This Ring, and Glidewell is now working on a fifth.
