Bestselling novelist Tucker MacKenzie comes to see Sarah Gallagher but arrives at an inopportune moment -- as her house and car go up in flames. Police Sergeant Lewis informs Sarah that the fire department thinks it was arson; which Sarah says she already knows. She informs Lewis that she plans to stay in an apartment above her shop, Old Things, that she co-owns with her partner Margo James. Tucker drives her to the shop, but before leaving he notices a man staring at them; a person who makes him nervous.

Tucker needs to know whether Sarah can truly see the future, but delays telling her his reason for visiting her. Instead he feels someone wants her dead. Sarah knows this stranger wants her dead, but is unsure why. As Tucker and Sarah investigate together, they find many murdered and missing probably dead psychics. What they remain ignorant about is that the individual targeting her for death works for a secret evil cabal that plans to remain hidden while controlling all psychic abilities. They know she will one day realize the truth if unchecked. Thus they attack Sarah on two fronts. They send professionals to kill her and they use her mind against her as the conspirators know she never fully recovered mentally from the death of a loved one, in which she guiltily holds herself culpable due to her paranormal skill misfiring.

The first Bishop Files romantic urban fantasy is a terrific new series that is an offshoot from the Bishop/FBI Special Unit thrillers. Sarah is a fascinating protagonist with her actions and reactions to her special skills making it seem real. Especially superbly done is how she relates to others as she takes it for granted that her neighbors spy on her as a curious need to know the local witch but do so from a distance. Tucker is a refreshing person for the heroine and readers as his motives seem different and he does not fear her ability; instead he embraces her with his heart and soul. They make a great team though she fears him getting to close to her as she believes people she loves die because of her.

The secret cabal is kept somewhat mysterious, which adds to the taut storyline of a powerful conspiracy by them to remain secret while dominating the psychics. Fast-paced and filled with non-stop action from the prologue until the climax, Bishop fans will appreciate this super tale as death and love stalk Sarah with Tucker insisting he remain with her during her harrowing journey.
