Former CIA agent Phoenix Smith, after a snafu on the job that resulted in her getting shot, goes home to Missouri to recuperate and rethink her career. She discovers that her best friend Annalynn Keyser's husband Boom has just died. The circumstances of his death were suspicious and Annalynn is convinced he was murdered. Evidence surfaces that makes Phoenix think so, too.
Phoenix, Annalynn, and Connie Diamante, the third member of their one-time teenage triumvirate, join forces again to solve the mystery of Boom's death. In their small town, everyone has known everyone else for years, and all three have old friendships and individual skills that they use to track down leads. Phoenix hides her CIA background and her injury in order to maintain her continuing cover as a boring financial investigator. But her friends note that she "drives like a race car driver, shoots like a cop and carries cash like a lobbyist" and they can't help being curious. All three women, it happens, are at decision points in their lives. Because of changed circumstances, each of them needs to chart a new path for herself. Developments in the course of their investigation into Boom's death help suggest what their new paths may be.
Show Me the Murder is the first entry in Mulford's Show Me mystery series, all to be set in Missouri, The Show Me State. Phoenix is a can-do heroine and all three of the women are appealing characters. The reader cheers when Annalynn steps up to take control of her life. Plot and setting are convincing and the compelling story keeps one reading. I look forward to finding out what the future has in store for all three of them.
