The citizens of Mercy thought Jeannie Sloan had gone elsewhere after her sixteen-year-old daughter disappeared ten years ago. They presumed the girl had run away, but she had taken nothing, not even her purse. Jeannie pestered the police for some time, but they turned up nothing after a cursory investigation. Then Jeannie disappeared as well.
Jeannie, found by Jillian and Dustin has been living in the mill and insists it is a holy place, and she must stay there. As efforts continue to investigate the mill site, Jillian finds Jeannie with a broken hip from a fall. When she is taken to the hospital, Jillian knows Jeannie wonít be allowed to return. Jillian and Dustin gather Jeannie's belongings and investigate the room she lived in at the mill. They discover a skeleton.
The town council owns the mill because the owners defaulted on tax payments years ago. Meanwhile, two competing developers are bidding for the right to develop the mill. One is the son of the former owner who considers the property rightfully his, and the head councilwoman keeps interfering with the police, demanding to know what is happening. Then, someone kills her.
Sweeney keeps the action flowing including threats to Jillian and Jeannie. Jillianís care of and sympathy for Jeannie is touching. Jeannieís ghost cat, Boots, helps solve the mystery and catch the murderer. Leann Sweeney is prolific mystery writer with two series, The Cats in Trouble Mysteries and The Yellow Rose Mysteries.
