Sarah Dearly and her new husband Thierry de Bennicoeur are spending the first few days of their honeymoon in Salem, Massachusetts. Thierry, a master vampire, has been sent to investigate the deaths of three vampires in Salem, a hotbed of witches and would-be ones. Witches and vampires are enemies. Then, another vampire dies.
Sarah is a fledgling vampire in love with her handsome and dour, centuries-old husband. Three hundred years ago while searching for a missing magic amulet, he disappeared and wasn't seen again for fifty years. The ruling vampire council, the Ring, wants to know why and where the amulet is now. A Ring member is threatening Sarah to gain the information.
She encounters the ghost of a notorious witch hunter, John Malik. Others don't see him although he is rumored to be haunting the town. Sarah is not fond of witches because she equates witch hunters with vampire hunters.
Sarah and Thierry stay at the Booberry Inn run by a witch, but one friendly to vampires. When Owen, a vampire friend, is killed, Sarah asks Heather, the witch to conduct a sťance. Owen is unaware of who killed him or why. So Sarah begins to investigate his many enemies and runs afoul of local witches.
Then, Owen somehow usurps Thierry's body. If Thierry remains a spirit for three days, he will die. A desperate Sarah is determined to prevent that and reunite Thierry with his body. He forbids her to contact the Ring for help.
Only a powerful witch could kill a vampire like Owen. Sarah learns of a local coven of three witches. She visits them, but gains no help. She needs a witch to reverse the spell or the witch's grimoire with an appropriate spell.
Sarah is brash, headstrong, and in love with her husband. She will save him regardless of the personal cost. In desperation she decides to search the coven leader's house.
Rowen provides plenty of red herrings, wrong guesses, and mistakes as Sarah pursues restoring her husband to his body. An exciting and unexpected climax will please mystery fans. She has written a number of novels for Berkley and now has a new mystery series, Immortality Bites, combining vampires and murders. Bled and Breakfast is the second of these. The next in the series is scheduled for release in 2014.
