When Andy Gammon and her mother-in-law attend a gala reopening dinner at a refurbished old-style resort hotel by the sea, they have no idea a young woman dining with them will end dead that night in the same room from which another woman disappeared a century earlier. Andy loves old buildings and puzzles. The murder proves irresistible, but dangerous to her.
The dead woman had claimed to be related to the family of the young woman, Marguerite Miller, who disappeared many years ago. Andy starts digging into the past and eventually finds a living descendant of the family with whom the young woman had talked. She claimed to have a letter written by the missing woman.
Marguerite, facing marriage with a suitable young man, is not ready for it and the responsibilities it entails. She longs for freedom and eventually plans to flee her family and finance. Initially, her companion, Alice, is charged with seeing she behaves appropriately. However, Marguerite manages to evade her when Alice suffers from a cold. Soon Marguerite's late night forays become a source of gossip and innuendo.
Pagel tells the story from both Andy's perspective and that of the missing woman. The title refers to Marguerite's nighttime forays. Andy's efforts to solve to the murder, the disappearance, and an attempted murder will keep the readers turning pages. This is the second Andy Gammon novel. The first was Here's the Church, Here's the Steeple.
