Acting Deputy Phoenix Smith and her acting-sheriff friend Annalynn are called to take part in the stakeout of an abandoned farmhouse. Members of the Cantree family are holed up there after robbing a bank and killing an employee in cold blood. When the Cantrees make a break for it, Phoenix kills one of them and goes to the top of the family's hit list.
Phoenix has a complicated past, not the least of which is being a covert CIA agent. After being injured on duty, she has returned to her Missouri hometown to recuperate and sell her mother's house. Instead, she re-connects with her old friends Annalynn and Connie and stays on, helping out Annalynn on crime investigations by using her CIA tradecraft skills. She is torn between enjoying the pleasures of small town life and missing the action on an international stage. In this third adventure, her life is complicated by the unwanted re-appearance of her ex-husband, and also her ambivalent feelings about a new suitor.
The complex plot of Show Me the Gold finds Phoenix getting into lots of tight corners as she hunts down the elusive Cantrees. Frequently she is saved at the last second by the alertness of her Belgian Shepherd, Achilles, who easily earns his place in the series' cover art. This very satisfying book traces the exploits of a 50-something single woman creating a new life for herself in small-town America; a CIA agent's second act.
