Last month, I reviewed the The Mystery Writers of America Cookbook: Wickedly Good Meals and Desserts to Die For and this month it's The Cozy Cookbook. So, it's been a great couple of months for reading and enjoying recipes.
The Cozy Cookbook is a trade paperback -- a softcover. The contents are subdivided into Breakfast; Breads, Muffins, and Other Baked Goodies; Soups, Salads, and Sandwiches; Drinks (including alcoholic beverages); Appetizers; Main Courses; Side Dishes; Desserts; and there's also an Index, Series Lists, and Author Bios.
Throughout the cookbook there are snippets (1-3 pages) of a scene usually related in somewhat to a recipe that highlights the series it came from. I found these interesting and may entice a reader to give one or another of the series a try. I found many recipes that I'm planning to try and my copy of the cookbook is colorfully marked with sticky notes. Most of the recipes are -- or appear to me on reading the lists of ingredients -- fairly high on the calories. So many of these I won't try until reach my goal weight or try them out with substitutions for some of the ingredients. Most look like they could be made "lighter" without losing taste or appeal.
Most of the recipes for Breakfast, Breads..., Main Courses, and Soups are simple easy to make homecooking or family meals. I'm thawing out chicken for the Chicken Pot Pie Soup with Dumplings (but I may skip the dumplings and make biscuits instead. Several of the muffin recipes had my mouth watering and the ingredients added to my grocery list.
This is a nice collection of recipes that use normal ingredients that most people would have in the cupboards. As usual, if you try the recipes out be sure to read the entire recipe through before you start. Also, make sure you have all the ingredients out and available before beginning. Don't ask why I stress this step but, it involves some very 'creative' substitutions and lets just say some interesting results.
A nice gift for a reader who loves mysteries with recipes. And a great addition to any cooks bookshelf.
