A film company is making a movie in the swamps of Georgia about a pirate treasure. That has led to a lot of vandalism and dug up lawns. Now, a man from the film crew is missing. The sheriff, familiar with Baxley's special talents, asks her to help in locating the missing man. Is he alive but lost in the swamp or has something worse happened?

Baxley Powell, a Dreamwalker, lives in rural Georgia and has a talent for walking the spirit world and talking to dead people. When her best friend Charlotte, a reporter for a local paper, asks for her help, Baxley can't refuse. Their exploration of June's Folly, a ramshackle old mansion, disturbs old ghosts including a ghost dog. She's uncertain if the dog is friend or foe. The spirits want her gone and overpower her.

During the exploration of the house, Baxley blacks out and is lost in the spirit world. Only her familiar, a demon named Rose, can help her, but Rose will extract a commitment in return and Baxley isn't certain she wants to pay it. Before she wakes, Rose whispers the dog's name. Once Baxley calls him by name, they become friends. When she wakes, she calls the sheriff and he sends men to investigate the current vandalism.

While helping the sheriff to solve the crime, she also has to cope with wealthy in-laws who want custody of Baxley's daughter Larissa. Luckily, Baxley has a staunch ally in the sheriff.

Toussaint holds the reader's attention and manages to get most readers to suspend disbelief. However, the spirits do not reveal the story all at once, but in dribbles at a time. Their motivations remain unclear until the end of the novel. The murderer will surprise a good percentage of the readers. Some will find the ending a bit too much to believe.

This is the third Dreamwalker novel by Toussaint. She has another series featuring Cleopatra Jones as well as other mysteries. She has also won several awards.
