Two short tales by Gary Lovisi feature Sherlock Holmes, Dr. Watson, and a Scotland Yard detective, Alex MacDonald. Holmes and MacDonald think alike, but MacDonald is a subordinate of Inspector Lestrade and hampered by department policies. Nonetheless he struggles along and consults with Sherlock Holmes.
Lady Westcott has reported a lost Ruby and Macdonald is assigned the case. He has no idea where it will lead especially when he learns what is missing is a dog. However, he sympathizes with the elderly widow and strives to help her despite lack of departmental interest. He discovers a break in a fence and the dead dog. Then, Lady Westcott disappears. Brainstorming between Sherlock and MacDonald along with insights from Mycroft provides clues to who might have killed the dog and why someone is after Lady Westcott.
In the second tale, "The Case of the Unseen Assassin”, well to do gentlemen are being killed for no apparent reason. No common thread seems to link the victims. Sherlock concludes that some victims were killed accidentally, but others had an unknown link to the assassin. Inspector Lestrade, as usual, has arrested an innocent man. It takes the brains of both Sherlock and MacDonald to sniff out a motive and apprehend the killer.
Lovisi has written a variety of books and short stories featuring Sherlock Holmes. He offers fans of Sherlock Holmes more puzzling adventures and links them to various events mentioned in the stories by Arthur Conan Doyle. A list of titles of his Sherlock Holmes efforts is included. His website provides more information on him and his publications.
