This second Change of Fortune Mystery again features Ruby Proulx, former charlatan and now a psychic for her aunt's Belden Hotel. When a guest of the hotel, a purported psychic and suffrage leader, is found drowned, authorities initially suspect suicide, but then it becomes a case of murder. Ruby risks possible arrest if her former life is discovered when she seeks to uncover the murderer.
After fleeing Canada because of the accidental death of a young man helping her father, Ruby found refuge with her aunt in Maine. She became the resident psychic at her aunt's hotel, the Belden. She has a talent for reading people and sometimes the assistance of a voice only she can hear adds to her advice.
When a suffrage leader stays at the hotel, she stirs up the town and violence ensues. The woman claims she is writing an exposé of several corrupt politicians including some local ones. A rally for suffrage turns into a battle and some women are hurt including Ruby.
A pleasure pier is soon to open, so authorities are anxious to avoid any disturbances, especially from suffragettes. However, the suffrage leader is determined to forge ahead. When she is found dead as a suspected suicide, the authorities are relieved.
Officer Yancey isn't so certain. He enlists Ruby's help to interview hotel guests who had contact with the victim. No one knows what happened to the manuscript written by the victim or why she would commit suicide.
The dead woman's history provides links to others currently in town, including a local politician, a hotel owner who covets the land the Belden Hotel sits on, a corrupt police chief, and others from the suffragette movement. The death is politically charged and Officer Yancey endangers his job by investigating.
Estevao again provides a fun mystery with a killer most readers won’t suspect. She handles Ruby’s exploration of her powers and the continuing attraction between Yancey and Ruby with a delicate touch. Ruby’s distrust of her growing ability with paranormal powers is believable. This novel follows Whispers Beyond the Veil.
